Many times we tie happiness with goals, achievements and people. What if we don’t get these things? Do we lead a life filled with sadness or no happiness? This is not so. We can’t go in life with sadness by our side all the time. We have states of ecstasy and troughs. But the extreme emotions usually fizzle out. And then we have neutral phases. It is the neutral time due to which we appreciate the happy times and despise the sad ones.

Happiness is the feeling of excitement or intense joy over a happening or a special occasion. But this is not a sustainable emotional state. Our bodies and minds don’t work this way. They can just bear these emotions for a small period of time. But we do witness ‘always happy’ and ‘don’t worry, be happy’ folks all the time. Well, they are just content with life! There is hardly anyone whose life turns out to be the way they want it. These significant failures to achieve life goals give birth to ‘contentment’.
Sadness is the state of feeling dejected due to some loss or failure in life. It is natural to mourn over the loss of a loved one or to feel down when rejected from a dream institution. But a continuous state of sadness could lead to clinical depression. This is where every person needs to find ‘contentment’.
‘To be content’ is something that is achievable as compared to ‘to be happy’ all the time. This is the realistic approach towards life. This state produces stability and satisfaction. It makes you accept the fact that life could be crappy at times but much of it makes you a fortunate and blessed person. Contentment gives you the strength to accept failures and move on in life without a constant state of sadness.
Life is not without happiness, sadness or contentment. But it is the perfect balance of all of these three states that make life pleasantly bearable.
